The Line: -- Over/Under:
Elise Mertens and Maria Sakkari meet in the quarterfinals of the 2019 tennis Morocco Open.
Elise Mertens is coming off a straight sets win over Ivana Jorovic that took 16 games to decide. In the victory, Mertens won 70 percent of her first serve points and 42 percent of her second serve points. Mertens won 57 percent of her total service points and converted on six of her 10 break points. Mertens has won both of her matches in straight sets and has produced a combined 11 breaks. This clearly isn’t the same player who entered this tournament losing five of her last seven matches. As long as Mertens stays in this form, she has to be considered the favorite to win the title in Morocco. Mertens has a chance to win three straight matches for the first time since winning the Qatar Open. Mertens has split her last four matches on clay court.
Maria Sakkari is coming off a straight sets win over Isabella Shinikova that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Sakkari won 62 percent of her first serve points and 75 percent of her second serve points. Sakkari won 66 percent of her total service points and converted on three of her four break points. Sakkari has won all four of her sets this tournament and has produced a combined 10 breaks. The key for Sakkari has been her first serve, as she’s been tough to beat when getting at least 60 percent of her first serve in play. Sakkari has a chance to win three matches in a single tournament for the second time in her last three tries. Sakkari has won five of her last seven matches on clay court.
These two have split the previous two matches, as Sakkari won in the 2016 Australian Open and Mertens won the 2014 ITF match. Both matches were played on hard court.
Both of these payers have put together some nice wins on clay up to this point and Sakkari is probably in better form overall. However, Mertens was the top seed in this tournament for a reason and she’s really performed well in her first two matches, which includes winning each of the last seven games of her last match. There’s still some unforced errors she needs to clean up, but this is Mertens’ match and tournament to lose at this point.
Mertens rolls into the semifinals.
