The Line: -- Over/Under:
Maria Sakkari and Johanna Konta meet in the second round of the 2019 tennis Eastbourne International.
Maria Sakkari is coming off a straight sets win over Jessica Pegula that took 15 games to decide. In the victory, Sakkari won 88 percent of her first serve points and 57 percent of her second serve points. Sakkari won 79 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her nine break points. Sakkari got 63 percent of her first serves in play and didn’t face a single break point. It was one of Sakkari’s best serving performances of the season and a performance that could have a carryover effect moving forward. Eight of Sakkari’s last 10 victories have been decided in straight sets. Sakkari hopes to win two matches for the third time in her last five tournaments. Sakkari has won three of her last five matches on grass court.
Johanna Konta is coming off a straight sets win over Dayana Yastremska that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Konta won 79 percent of her first serve points and 76 percent of her second serve points. Konta won 78 percent of her total service points and converted on three of her nine break points. Konta got 63 percent of her first serves in play and didn’t face a single break point. Six of Konta’s last seven victories have been decided in straight sets. Konta hopes to win two matches for the fourth time in her last six tournaments. Konta has won two of her last three matches on grass court.
These two have played three times and Konta won two of those matches. The most recent meeting was this year in Rabat, a match Sakkari won in three sets. Konta won this years Fed Cup and the 2017 Wimbledon.
Konta has been the more consistent player the last few months and is far more trustworthy on grass. Konta has also had more success against Sakkari, winning five of the eight sets against each other. Sakkari is showing signs of improving what has been a hit or miss up and down season, but Konta has been impressive these last several tournaments. Konta also has the home crowd on her side, which doesn’t hurt.
I like Konta to edge this match.
