Maria Sakkari and Polona Hercog meet in the semifinals of the 2018 tennis Istanbul Cup.
Maria Sakkari is coming off a straight sets win over Arantxa Rus that took 22 games to decide. In the victory, Sakkari won 76 percent of her first serve points and 56 percent of her second serve points. Sakkari was really dominant with her first serve and managed to win 68 percent of her total service points. Sakkari hasn’t dropped a set this tournament and is actually playing some of her best tennis in quite some time, which includes winning 17 of her last 21 sets overall. Sakkari has lost six of her last eight semifinal appearances. Sakkari hopes to make her first ever WTA final appearance. Sakkari has won six of her last eight matches on clay court.
Polona Hercog is coming off a straight sets win over Svetlana Kuznetsova that took 26 games to decide. In the victory, Hercog won 65 percent of her first serve points and 41 percent of her second serve points. Hercog didn’t play the cleanest match in the world, as she struggled with her second serve and was broken five times, but she fought through a grueling match and found a way to victory. Hercog is enjoying some of the most consistent WTA success she’s had in quite some time, but she must improve her service percentages to continue this run. Hercog has won each of her last three semifinal appearances. Hercog hopes to make her first final appearance since the 2012 Swedish Open and the fifth final appearance of her career. Hercog has won five of her last seven matches on clay court.
This will be the first ever meeting between these two players.
Sakkari has had a much easier time to get to this point and has been playing far more consistent tennis, winning 17 of her last 21 sets. It’s been a while since Hercog has been on the big stage and is coming off a match in which she couldn’t get any consistency from her serve.
Sakkari should cruise in this match, advancing to the final.
