Maria Sharapova and Donna Vekic meet in the second round of the 2018 tennis French Open.

Maria Sharapova is coming off a three sets win over Richèl Hogenkamp that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Sharapova won 67 percent of her first serve points and 43 percent of her second serve points. Sharapova continues to play sloppy tennis, which included 29 unforced errors, but she’s grinding matches out finding a way to get positive results. Sharapova has a long way before returning to one of the top players in the world, but inconsistent tennis or not, a win is all that matters at the end of the day. Sharapova is capable of serving much better than what she has been recently. Sharapova hasn’t lost before the third round of a grand slam since the 2013 Wimbledon. Sharapova has won eight of her last 10 matches on clay court.

Donna Vekic is coming off a straight sets win over Kateryna Bondarenko that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Vekic won 60 percent of her first serve points and 48 percent of her second serve points. Vekic managed to win in straight sets despite not serving well and producing seven double faults. Vekic did win 55 percent of her return points and broke six times, something she’ll have to do in this match if she hopes to hang around. Vekic has now won seven of her last nine sets on clay court. Vekic hopes to make the third round of a grand slam for the third time in her career. Vekic has won seven of her last 10 matches on clay court.

This will be the first match between these two players.

Sharapova needs to take her game to another level if she hopes to make a deep tournament run, but the fact she has yet to play her best could be an encouraging sign, as there’s still a possibility she rises her game. Vekic also has little to no grand slam success and didn’t play well in her first round match despite a straight sets win.

Sharapova should win this match.
