Maria Sharapova and Mihaela Buzarnescu meet in the first round of the 2018 tennis Madrid Masters.
Maria Sharapova is in full struggle mode at the moment, as she’s lost each of her last four matches and is now 5-5 on the season overall. Sharapova has struggled with her second serve all year long and is coming off a match in Stuttgart in which she had 10 double faults. This obviously isn’t the Sharapova we’re used to seeing, and it isn’t even the Sharapova that returned from suspension and finished last season on a strong note. Either way, Sharapova is a player to keep an eye on, as it may be a matter of time before things turn around. Sharapova hasn’t lost in the first round of the Madrid Masters since 2010. Sharapova has split her last six matches on clay court.
Mihaela Buzarnescu has turned her season around lately on clay court and is fresh off a final appearance in the Prague Open. Buzarnescu has been returning well on this surface and has been rather consistent with her first serve. Buzarnescu has a chance to build on her success if she continues to be aggressive with her return while limiting her unforced errors. However, it’s going to be interesting to see how Buzarnescu goes from just her second final appearance to playing one of the bigger names in the field. This is a very quick turnaround for the 30-year-old Romanian. Buzarnescu has won five of her last seven matches on clay court.
These two have played once, which was in this years Shenzhen Open, a match Sharapova won in straight sets. The match took 15 games to be decided.
Buzarnescu is in better form obviously and will have a chance to win if both of these players keep playing the way they’re playing. However, Sharapova made light work with her in their match earlier this year, and she’s the fresher player of the two. We often see players struggle who are fresh off a final appearance and immediately jumping into another tournament. Not to mention it’s not like Buzarnescu is used to this given her lack of deep success.
I like Sharapova to end this losing streak.
