Maria Sharapova and Sofia Kenin meet in the third round of the 2017 US Open.
Maria Sharapova is coming off a three sets win over Timea Babos that took 30 games to decide. In the victory, Sharapova won 78 percent of her first serve points and 38 percent of her second serve points. Sharapova didn’t play the cleanest match in the second round, but she did win 51 percent of her return points and broke eight times. Those type of numbers give Sharapova a chance to beat anybody, but conditioning certainly is a question considering she hasn’t played many matches this season and isn’t used to making a deep tournament run since her suspension. Sharapova hasn’t lost before the fourth round of a grand slam since the 2013 Wimbledon. Sharapova has won six of her last eight matches on hard court.
Sofia Kenin is coming off a three sets win over Sachia Vickery that took 32 games to decide. In the victory, Kenin won 69 percent of her first serve points and 36 percent of her second serve points. Kenin also had issues with her service game, but she won 50 percent of her return points and produced six breaks. Kenin is an 18-year-old American with very little experience under her belt on this stage, but we know the New York crowd will be behind her as much as they can. However, Kenin has to be stronger with her serve to have a chance in this contest. Kenin hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time. Kenin has won seven of her last 10 matches on hard court.
This will be the first time these two play.
Conditioning could be on Kenin’s side here, and the crowd is known to do wonders for an underdog. However, Sharapova has been too sharp overall this tournament to bet against. She’s hitting the ball with pace and you can see that form quickly coming together as she gets her feet under her. Experience also matters in grand slams, and the young Kenin is obviously outmatched in that department.
Sharapova should cruise into the fourth round.
