Baker vs. Cilic
|Date & Time||Monday June 27, 2016, 9:00 PM (EDT)|
The Line -- Over/Under:
Marin Cilic and Brian Baker square off early in the first round of the 2016 Wimbledon.
Marin Cilic hopes he can find his form quickly in this tournament after splitting his last eight matches and coming away with a first round exit in the French Open. Cilic did make the semifinals of the AEGON Championships and took Andy Murray to three sets, but he’s been hit or miss overall and needs to find consistency quickly. We know what Cilic is capable of when hitting his spots and serving well, as he can beat anybody on any given day. However, you have to question which Cilic is going to show up here. Cilic has lost in the first round of a grand slam just once since 2012, which was this year's French Open. Cilic has won seven of his last 10 matches on grass.
Brian Baker enters this tournament losing four straight matches and will double dip with his partner Marcus Daniell. Baker has played just 12 singles matches since 2013 due to injury and he’s clearly just trying to find his footing after such a long layoff. Remember, Baker was a top-50 player back in 2012 and did upset Gaston Gaudio in the 2005 US Open. Baker should still have some good tennis left after just turning 31 years old, but he has to get more matches under his belt first. Baker has not advanced past the first round of a grand slam since the 2013 Australian Open. Baker has won six of his last eight matches on grass.
This will be the first time these two meet on the tennis court.
Even with Cilic and his inconsistencies, you have to like him here against Baker, who has barely played double-digit matches in the last three years. It’s going to be a while before Baker returns to form and can be taken seriously again. This should be an easy first round match for Cilic.
Give me Cilic in straight sets.
