Danielle Parhizkaran-USA TODAY SPORTS

Croatian tennis superstar, Marin Cilic has made it into the third round of the 2019 ATP Indian Wells Open in California. At this stage of the tournament, Marin Cilic will play against Denis Shapovalov from Canada.

Denis Shapovalov won his previous match in straight sets against Steve Johnson from the United States. During the win, Shapovalov served exceptionally well as he hit 8 aces and had a first serve percentage of 80%. Shapovalov won 71% of his service points which allowed him to win all of his service games. In addition to that, Shapovalov broke Johnson’s serve on 2 occasions to set up a comfortable victory. Shapovalov has been in decent form recently as he made the quarterfinals of the Rotterdam Open and the Open Sud de France prior to arriving at Indian Wells.

On the other side of the court, Marin Cilic also won his previous match in straight sets. It was a dominant display by Cilic as he won 80% of his service games and broke his opponents serve on 4 occasions. Cilic is the number 10 seed for this tournament and is a very accomplished playing having won a US Open title in 2014. With such experience, Marin Cilic will enter this match with lots of confidence.

Marin Cilic and Denis Shapovalov have played once in the past. The match was played in 2018 at ATP Basel where Marin Cilic won in straight sets.

All in all, I am going to pick Marin Cilic to win this match. Cilic is a very accomplished player and he is looking in very good form considering how easily he won his previous match. Shapovalov is a very talented player but he still lacks experience and composure which could be a weakness against Marin Cilic. Marin Cilic is the stronger player and I see him getting the victory.
