The Line: -- Over/Under:
Marin Cilic and Diego Schwartzman meet in the third round round of the 2018 tennis Rogers Cup.
Marin Cilic is coming off a three sets win over Borna Coric that took 25 games to decide. In the victory, Cilic won 87 percent of his first serve points and 41 percent of his second serve points. Cilic won 67 percent of his total service points and was broken on just one of eight break points. Cilic was lights out with his first serve in the victory, but his second serve needs to improve, especially where he had four unforced errors. When Cilic is bombing aces and having no trouble winning points on his racket, he’s a completely different player and somebody more than capable of winning this whole tournament. Of course, second serve trouble is the reason Cilic lost in the second round of the Wimbledon, as well. Cilic has won four of his last six matches on hard court.
Diego Schwartzman is coming off a three sets win over Sam Querrey that took 26 games to decide. In the victory, Schwartzman won 82 percent of his first serve points and 46 percent of his second serve points. Schwartzman dominated the final set in which he lost just one game, and he won 67 percent of his total service points for the match. Schwartzman has been very consistent this tournament with his return and has now produced a combined eight breaks in his last two matches. This is easily some of the better tennis I’ve seen from Schwartzman this year, even if its only been five sets. Schwartzman has a chance to win three matches in a single tournament for the first time since the French Open. Schwartzman has split his last six matches on hard court.
These two have split the two meetings, as Schwartzman won the 2017 US Open and Cilic won the 2017 Istanbul Open.
Schwartzman has been great with his return, but I’m not sure that matters with Cilic powering the ball like he has lately. On hard court, Cilic is going to get so many free points with his serve and put pressure on Schwartzman to play perfect tennis. Schwartzman hasn’t been as consistent with his second serve to get the job done in those situations. Cilic will see just enough break chances to get the job done here.
Cilic reaches the quarters.
