The Line: Mayer +550 / Cilic -800 -- Over/Under:
Marin Cilic and Florian Mayer meet in the second round of the 2017 Wimbledon.
Marin Cilic is coming off a straight sets win over Philipp Kohlschreiber that took 27 games to decide. In the victory, Cilic won 79 percent of his first serve points and 56 percent of his second serve points. Cilic continues his great form on grass court, as he lost just 12 of 56 first serve points and produced 47 winners. Cilic wasn’t broken in the opening match and if he continues to serve at an elite level, he’s going to be tough to beat in this tournament. Cilic has lost before the third round of a grand slam three times since 2014. Cilic has won seven of his last nine matches on grass court.
Florian Mayer is coming off a one set win over Viktor Troicki that took seven games to decide. In the victory, Mayer won 100 percent of his first serve points and 75 percent of his second serve points. Mayer won all 13 of his first serve points and 52 percent of his return points before Troicki retired. Mayer is now 3-2 on grass court this season and the added rest due to such a quick match should help the 33-year-old. Mayer has 12 career victories over top-10 players with his most recent coming in the 2016 Halle Open. Mayer hopes to make the third round of a grand slam for the first time since the 2014 Australian Open. Mayer has split his last six matches on grass court.
These two have split the previous four meetings with Cilic winning the most recent meeting in the 2015 Monte Carlo Masters. Mayer’s last win over Cilic came in the 2010 Zagreb Open.
Mayer has had zero grand slam success over the years and who knows how the opening match would have turned out if Troicki wasn’t forced to retire. It’s tough to support him against a player of Cilic’s caliber, especially with the way Marin is playing on grass this season when you include his performance in the Queen's Club Championships.
Cilic likely wins this match in three sets.
