Marin Cilic and James Duckworth meet in the first round of the 2018 tennis French Open.

Marin Cilic has been hit or miss this season, as he’s 16-8 on the year and is coming off a semifinals appearance in the Rome Masters. Cilic is coming off one of his better tournaments of the season and has been highly impressive with his first serve as of late. As long as Cilic can rack up the free points and avoid the silly unforced errors, he’s always that guy who isn’t talked about much who can make a deep grand slam run. Of course, Cilic made his first ever French Open quarterfinal last year, so he’ll have some improved confidence in this tournament. Cilic has lost in the first round of a grand slam once since 2012. Cilic has won five of his last eight matches on clay.

James Duckworth has played just three matches since the 2017 Australian Open, as he’s battled multiple injuries and is coming off of foot surgery. Duckworth hasn’t played a match on clay court since the 2015 French Open. Duckworth has played just one match on the main tour the last two years. Easy to say that it’s going to take Duckworth, a guy who was a top-90 player a few years ago, quite some time to return to form and even be respectable in main tournaments. With that said, limited expectations could be good and allow him to play free tennis. Duckworth hopes to make the second round of a grand slam for the sixth time in his career. Duckworth has split his last eight matches on clay.

This will be the first match between these two players.

Duckworth hasn’t played on clay in three years and has almost no tennis under his belt at all the last two years. Being thrown into the fire against a top-10 player simply isn’t fair.

Cilic wins in straight easy sets.
