Marin Cilic and John Isner square off Friday in the third round of the 2015 Wimbledon.
Marin Cilic is coming off a five sets victory over Ricardas Berankis, which took over three and a half hours. Cilic is getting at least 64 percent of his first serves in play and winning at least 80 percent of those points. Cilic is winning at least 50 percent of his second serve points and has a combined seven double faults. Cilic has 43 aces, 105 winners and 52 unforced errors in his first two matches. Cilic has already proven he’s one of the best servers in the game and can compete with anyone. However, you have to worry about fatigue here after such a long match in the second round. Cilic has made at least the fourth round of his last three grand slam appearances, and the fourth round of the Wimbledon three times.
John Isner is coming off a straight sets win over Matthew Ebden, which took under two hours. Isner has gotten at least 72 percent of his first serves in play and has won at least 79 percent of those points. Isner has won at least 47 percent of his second serve points and has combined for four double faults. Isner has hit 61 aces, 105 winners and 38 unforced errors in his first two matches. Isner is in great form right now, as he’s hitting his spots and has been able to keep both of his matches under two hours. A fresh Isner is a dangerous player given his power and ability to length matches. Isner has reached the fourth round of a grand slam just once since 2012 and has never reached it in the Wimbledon.
These two have played five times in the past, and Cilic has won four of those meetings. The most recent was in Delray Beach in 2014, a match Cilic won in straight sets. Isner’s only win over Cilic was in the 2011 Indian Wells Masters. This will be the first time the two meet on grass.
I’ve always been a huge fan of Isner and always thought he had a chance to do real damage if he could keep his matches short and stay fresh. Well, here you go. I like Isner to pull off the slight upset.
