Marin Cilic and John Isner meet in the semifinals of the 2016 Paris Masters.

Marin Cilic is coming off a straight sets win over Novak Djokovic that took 23 games to decide. In the victory, Cilic won 76 percent of his first serve points and 52 percent of his second serve points. Cilic has been on quite a roll recently after just winning the Swiss Indoors and being a victory away from competing for his third title since August. As long as Cilic continues to get his first serve in play, he’s going to be tough to beat considering he’s won no less than 71 percent of his first serve points in this tournament. Cilic is finishing the season in terrific form overall. Cilic has won five of his last seven semifinal matches. Cilic has won eight straight matches on indoor hard court.

John Isner is coming off a three set win over Jack Sock that took 33 games to decide. In the victory, Isner won 71 percent of his first serve points and 57 percent of his second serve points. Isner has found his form recently after he’s struggled the last couple of months with consistent play and some nagging injuries. Isner has now strung back-to-back quarterfinal appearances and is a victory away from reaching his second final of the season. Isner also has a chance to beat his first top-10 player this season as well. Of course, the issue with Isner is always with the serve, as he has a chance to beat anybody in the world when he’s dropping aces down the hatch. Isner has racked up 56 aces in his last three matches. Isner has split his last six semifinal appearances. Isner has won six of his last seven matches on indoor hard court.

These two have played five times in the past and Cilic has won all five meetings. The most recent match was in the 2015 Wimbledon, a match that took five sets to decide. Three of the last four matches between Isner and Cilic have been decided in straight sets.

I’m always intrigued with Isner and possible plus money, as his service game gives him a chance against anyone. However, the head to head is quite telling and there’s no denying Cilic is the more complete player who is also in better form. Isner has a chance here, but Cilic should win the match, especially after what he just did to Djokovic.
