Croatian tennis player, Marin Cilic has made it into the third round of the 2019 ATP Madrid Masters. At this stage of the tournament, Cilic will play against Laslo Djere from Serbia.

Marin Cilic had a tough second round match where the Croatian lost the opening set. That being said, Cilic fought back extremely well to win the overall match. During the win, Marin Cilic served exceptionally well as he won 69% of his service points which allowed him to win 93% of his service games. It is important to note that Cilic struggled with his serve as he only won 2 return games in the entire match. Cilic is a power player and he often struggles on clay due to the slow nature of the surface. The slow nature was not an issue in the second round as his opponent player in a similar style but with an opponent like Laslo Djere, Cilic must improve his defensive play.

On the other side of the coin, Laslo Djere enters this match having beaten Juan Martin del Potro in 3 sets. It was a very good win for Djere as he eliminated the number 7 seed. It has been a very strong clay court season for Laslo Djere as he won the Rio Open in March. Furthermore, Laslo Djere made the semifinals of the Hungarian Open and Sao Paulo Open. Djere has impressed in most clay tournaments this season and he will be confident that he can challenge a top player like Marin Cilic.

This will be the first time that Laslo Djere and Marin Cilic will be playing each other at an ATP event.

Looking at this contest, I am going to pick Laslo Djere to win this match. Marin Cilic looks uncomfortable when playing on clay and I see him struggling against an athletic opponent like Laslo Djere. Djere has been exceptional on clay this season and I see him making it into the quarterfinals of the Madrid Masters.
