Marin Cilic and Marius Copil meet in the first round of the 2018 tennis US Open.

Marin Cilic enters this tournament as one of the hotter players in the draw, as he’s won 11 of his last 14 matches, which includes winning the Queen's Club Championships. Cilic is serving at a high level as usual, but it’s been his improved return that’s helped him sustain this consistent success. Even in his recent loss to Novak Djokovic, Cilic played a flawless first set and was probably the better player on that court despite the result. If Cilic can continue this form, he’s a serious candidate to consider for a future bet before the tournament starts. Cilic hasn’t lost in the first round of a grand slam since the 2016 French Open. Cilic has won five of his last seven matches on hard court.

Marius Copil enters this tournament splitting his last 14 matches when you include qualifying. Copil won two matches in Washington and put together an impressive victory over Philipp Kohlschreiber in Cincinnati. Copil has clearly built some momentum as of late and will be able to hang around if he can continue to get free points with his serve. The issue with the 27-year-old Romanian is that he has no success on the grand slam stage and has only had one previous US Open appearance. Grand Slam play is a different feel, and it’s hard to trust guys who have given you no reason to. Copil has made it out of the first round of a grand slam once in his career, which was the 2015 Australian Open. Copil has won five of his last eight matches on hard court.

These two have split the previous two meetings, as Copil won the Beijing Open in 2012 and Cilic won in Cincinnati of this year. Both matches were decided in straight sets.

Copil has shown flashes of being a sneaky good player who could maybe steal a set, but there’s nothing that suggests he’s going to beat a top-10 player on one of the biggest stages in the world. Not to mention Cilic has played some of the best tennis we’ve seen from him, and he should be eager to build on that success.

Cilic wins in straight sets.
