The Line: -- Over/Under:
Marin Cilic and Nicolas Jarry meet in the second round of the 2018 tennis Shanghai Masters.
Marin Cilic is coming off a first match loss in Tokyo and has lost three of his last four matches overall. In his last performance, Cilic gave his opponent 12 break points and had five double faults. We honestly haven’t seen Cilic struggle this much probably since Miami when he had early exits in both Brazil and Indian Wells. The good news for the Croatian is that he’s still one of the top players in the world and is always a few aces away from turning things around. You know when Cilic is feeling it, and if he can put together some impressive sets, he’ll instantly become somebody who is capable of leaving with the title. Obviously, a fast start will be needed from Cilic here if that’s going to take place. Cilic has won six of his last eight matches on hard court.
Nicolas Jarry is coming off a three sets win over Mischa Zverev that took 32 games to decide. In the victory, Jarry won 78 percent of his first serve points and 53 percent of his second serve points. Jarry won 69 percent of his total service points and saved two of his three break points. Jarry got 66 percent of his first serves in play and hit 18 aces, a formula that would give him a fighting chance in this match if he can repeat it. The issue with Jarry is consistency, as he entered this tournament splitting his last eight matches and can really have issues with his second serve at times. Jarry has one career win over a top-10 player, which came this year against Dominic Thiem in Hamburg. Jarry has won four of his last six matches on hard court.
There’s no previous matches between these two players.
You should seriously tread lightly with Cilic in his current form, as he’s really struggling at the moment and not hitting his shots with much confidence. The problem is Jarry hasn’t had a ton of success against top tier players, has had issues of his own making deep runs and has a shaky second serve.
I’ll back Cilic to win this match, as he can’t continue to struggle forever.
