Marin Cilic and Novak Djokovic meet in the semifinals of the tennis Cincinnati Open.
Marin Cilic is coming off a straight sets win over Pablo Carreno-Busta that took 23 games to decide. In the victory, Cilic won 88 percent of his first serve points and 52 percent of his second serve points. Cilic won 70 percent of his total service points and dropped just four of 32 first serve points. Cilic has been lights out with his serve this tournament has combined for 19 aces in his last three matches. As long as Cilic is hitting his spots and getting so many free points, he’s a threat against anybody in the remaining draw. Novak Djokovic is coming off a three sets win over Milos Raonic that took 31 games to decide. In the victory, Djokovic won 65 percent of his first serve points and 68 percent of his second serve points. Djokovic won 66 percent of his total service points and produced five aces. Djokovic can still take his game to another level, as he was broken three times, but he’s been able to find a winning formula and is currently playing his most consistent tennis since returning from injury. As long as the unforced errors are down, Djokovic has to love his chances to beat anybody on the planet. Djokovic has a chance to make his third final appearance of the year and his 101st final appearance of his career. Djokovic has a chance to make his first Masters Series final appearance since the 2017 Italian Open. Djokovic has won six of his last seven matches on hard court.
These two have played 16 times and Djokovic has won 14 of those meetings. The most recent match was in this years Queen's Club Championships, a match Cilic won in three sets. Djokovic is 10-0 against Cilic on outdoor hard court.
Cilic has won the last two matches against Djokovic, so he certainly has a chance in this match. However, Djokovic has been the more consistent player as of late and is much easier to trust with his return ability. Not to mention Cilic has never beaten Djokovic on outdoor hard court, as he’s lost all 10 matches.
