The Line: -- Over/Under:
Marin Cilic and Ryan Harrison meet in the second round of the 2018 tennis Rome Masters.
Marin Cilic is coming off an embarrassing loss to Malek Jaziri in Instabul and enters this tournament just 2-3 on clay court. Cilic has had an up and down season overall, but he’s usually pretty solid on this surface and did make the quarterfinals of this tournament last year. However, Cilic is coming off a match in which he got nothing from his serve and was actually broken five times. That’s just stuff we don’t see from the talented Cilic, so there may be something more to him just having a bad performance. It will be interesting to watch Cilic early, as his current form will be key as we start gearing up for the 2018 French Open. Cilic has split his last eight matches on clay court.
Ryan Harrison is coming off a straight sets win over Yuichi Sugita that took 22 games to decide. In the victory, Harrison won 83 percent of his first serve points and 46 percent of his second serve points. Harrison is coming off an impressive performance in which he dropped just eight of his service points and produced 11 aces. Harrison also wasn’t broken once and managed to win a tight first set tiebreak. It’s an overall impressive showing from the American who was a brutal 3-7 on clay court last year. Time will tell if Harrison can be just as sharp against a much better and more qualified opponent. Harrison has two career wins over top-10 players, but none of those have come since 2016. Harrison has split his last six matches on clay court.
These two have played seven times and Cilic has won six of those matches. The most recent match was in this years Australian Open, a match Cilic won in straight years. Harrison’s only win over Cilic was in Acapulco in 2016.
It’s tough to ignore the dominance from Cilic over Harrison, especially when these two just played a couple of months ago. I’m also going to chalk Cilic’s recent form to just minor hiccups and nothing serious. As long as Cilic is feeling good, he should win this match, but it certainly won’t be easy, as Harrison is feisty and can serve at a high level.
