Stakhovsky vs. Cilic
|Date & Time||Wednesday June 29, 2016, 9:00 PM (EDT)|
The Line -- Over/Under:
Marin Cilic and Sergiy Stakhovsky square off early in the second round of the 2016 Wimbledon.
Marin Cilic is coming off a straight sets win over Brian Baker that took less than two hours. In the victory, Cilic won 53 of his 88 first serve points and racked up 43 winners to 25 unforced errors. Cilic has been solid ever since his early exit in Miami, and he’s very tough to beat when he’s dropping aces down the hatch and hitting winners at a high percentage. Cilic hit 18 winners in three sets of play and is poised for a deep run if that type of play continues. Cilic hopes to make the third round of a grand slam for the eighth time in his last nine tries. Cilic has won eight of his last 11 matches on grass.
Sergiy Stakhovsky is coming off a straight sets win over Yoshihito Nishioka that took less than an hour and a half. In the victory, Stakhovsky won 56 of his 77 first serve points and racked up 46 winners and 24 unforced errors. Stakhovsky is just trying to find some consistency, as he’s really struggled in ATP events this season and is barely hanging around in the top-100 rankings. The good news for Stakhovsky is that he had 19 aces in three sets and could pull off an upset if he’s able to get that many free points again in this match. Stakhovsky has made the third round of a grand slam twice since 2014. Stakhovsky has won seven of his last nine matches on grass.
These two have played four times in the past and Cilic leads the series, 4-0. The most recent match was in the 2013 Chennai Open, a match Cilic won in three sets. This will be the first match on grass.
Stakhovsky hasn’t been consistent or good enough this season for anybody to believe he can beat a Cilic who is hitting his spots. Cilic has found his rhythm in Wimbledon with back-to-back quarterfinal appearances.
Stakhovsky will have his usual early grand slam exit.
