Marin Cilic and Steve Johnson meet in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Aegon Championships.

Marin Cilic is coming off a straight sets win over Janko Tipsarevic that took 18 games to decide. Cilic came into this tournament on a three-match losing streak, so picking up two quick victories has to feel good. Cilic has now won six of his last 10 matches overall and has dropped just one set this tournament. Cilic is still trying to find his footing after not playing a lot, as this will be just his ninth match since Miami, but he’s looked sharp in the first two matches of this tournament. Cilic hopes to make his third semifinal appearance of the 2016 season. Cilic has won 12 of his last 17 matches on grass.

Steve Johnson is coming off a three set victory over Adrian Mannarino that took 29 games to decide. Speaking of confidence, Johnson has to be thrilled to make it this far after losing seven of his last eight matches heading into this tournament. Johnson has been struggling with his service game, racked up unforced errors and the confidence was being thrown out of the window. However, beating a top-10 player in Richard Gasquet in the first round may have helped Johnson get out of his recent funk. Johnson hopes to make his first semifinal appearance since the 2015 Valencia Open. Johnson has split his last 12 matches on grass.

These two have met once in the past, which was in the 2015 Japan Open, a match Cilic won in straight sets. The match took 18 games to decide. This will obviously be the first match on grass.

Johnson still has more showing and proving to do before he can be taken seriously against a player as talented as Cilic. Johnson is just in brutal form even if he looked solid in his first two matches.

Expect Cilic and his shotmaking to prevail to the semis.
