The Line: -- Over/Under:
Marin Cilic and Steve Johnson meet in the third round of the 2017 Wimbledon.
Marin Cilic is coming off a straight sets win over Florian Mayer that took 35 games to decide. In the victory, Cilic won 91 percent of his first serve points and 55 percent of his second serve points. Cilic continues to play terrific tennis on grass court, and he’s dropped just 17 first serve points in his first two matches. Cilic has now won 15 of his last 18 sets on grass, and he’s coming off a match in which he hit 66 winners. Cilic simply has to love the way he’s playing right now as he hopes to make the fourth round of the Wimbledon for a sixth time in his career. Cilic also hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the eighth time since 2014. Cilic has won six of his last seven matches on grass court.
Steve Johnson is coming off a four sets win over Radu Albot that took 37 games to decide. In the victory, Johnson won 75 percent of his first serve points and 67 percent of his second serve points. Johnson is coming off a match in which he got 71 percent of his first serves in play and hit 41 winners to 28 unforced errors. Johnson picked up some much needed momentum during the clay season, and he’s clearly built on that success at least for the first two matches in this tournament. Johnson hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the second time in his career. Johnson has two career wins over top-10 players, both of which came last season. Johnson has split his last eight matches on grass court.
These two have played twice and Cilic has won both matches. The most recent match was in the 2016 Queen's Club Championships, a match decided in three sets. This will be the second meeting on grass.
If Johnson is going to serve well and not have those letdowns that creep into his game often, he has a chance to be really competitive here. It’s consistency and being able to hit that second gear against top tier competition that gives Johnson issues. Unfortunately for the American, he’s had trouble against elite comp, and Cilic is playing possibly his best tennis of the season right now. Cilic’s serve is going to put a lot of pressure on Johnson to come through time and time again, and I’m not confident he can get the job done.
Cilic gets to the fourth round of the Wimbledon yet again.
