Felix Auger-Aliassime and Matteo Berrettini meet in the final of the 2019 tennis Stuttgart Open.
Felix Auger-Aliassime is coming off a victory over Milos Raonic after he withdrew due to a back injury. While nobody wants to make the final that way, I’m sure the young Canadian will take it given that he just played three sets and two and a half hours against Dustin Brown. Auger-Aliassime now enters this match with a heavy rest advantage and a serve that’s produced 45 aces in his last two matches. Auger-Aliassime is hitting the ball as well as he has all year and is playing with increased confidence as of late. Auger-Aliassime has a chance to win his first ever singles title, as he’s lost his previous two final appearances, both coming this year. Auger-Aliassime lost both of his previous final appearances in straight sets, but this will be his first ever final on grass court. Auger-Aliassime has won his last four matches on grass court.
Matteo Berrettini is coming off a straight sets win over Jan-Lennard Struff that took 22 games to decide. In the victory, Berrettini won 89 percent of his first serve points and 65 percent of his second serve points. Berrettini won 81 percent of his total service points and converted on two of his four break points. Berrettini got 65 percent of his first serves in play and saved both of his break points. Berrettini has won all eight sets this tournament and hasn’t been broken once. With wins in 16 of his last 19 matches, Berrettini has quietly been one of the hotter players on tour and is now in his third final appearance since April. Berrettini looks to win his second title of the year and his third title of his career. Berrettini is 2-1 in final appearances overall and has never played a final on grass court. Berrettini has won five of his last six matches on grass court.
There’s no match history between these two players.
Auger-Aliassime will eventually start stacking the resume with titles and has a shot in this match given the rest advantage and the way he’s been serving. However, Berrettini has been downright rolling as of late and has gone three of his four matches without even facing a break point. Auger-Aliassime still provides a sloppy game here and there where a talented or experienced player such as Berrettini will take advantage of that opening. Overall, Berrettini is playing too well to bet against at the moment.
Berrettini wins his second title of the year.
