The Line: -- Over/Under:
Russian tennis superstar, Karen Khachanov will begin his grass court season at the 2019 ATP Stuttgart Open. Karen Khachonov will start his campaign in the second round where he will play against Matteo Berrettini from Italy.
Matteo Berrettini defeated Nick Kyrgios in straight sets in the previous round. During the victory, Berrettini served exceptionally strongly. Matteo Berrettini hit 10 aces and won 82% of his service points which allowed him to win all of his service games. In addition to that, Matteo Berrettini also won 2 break points to secure the result. Matteo Berrettini enters this tournament following a strong clay season and while his win over Kyrgios will only build to his confidence, the Italian will be aware that this will be a much tougher fixture.
Karen Khachanov, in comparison, received an opening round bye since he is the number 2 seed. Khachanov had a strong French Open campaign where he made it to the quarterfinals before being eliminated by Dominic Thiem. While at Roland Garros, Khachanov defeat Juan Martin Del Potro. The result against Del Potro should give Khachanov lots of confidence as he moves into this tournament. Moving into the grass season should be positive for Karen Khachanov as he has a good record on grass courts. Karen Khachanov’s career grass court statistics show a 60% win rate which included a 5-2 record at Wimbledon. Karen Khachanov has established himself as a top player over the past season and he will be confident in his ability to do well in this tournament.
Karen Khachanov and Matteo Berrettini have played each other once in the past. The match was played earlier in the season at ATP Sofia where Matteo Berrettini won in 3 sets.
Matteo Berrettini has been playing well and has already beaten Karen Khachanov in 2019. That being said, I see Berrettini losing this match. Matteo Berrettini is relatively weak on grass and I don’t see the Italian being good enough to beat Khachanov on an unfavored surface. Karen Khachanov looks in good form following a strong French Open and I see him starting his grass court season with a win.
