Maximilian Marterer and Rafael Nadal meet in the fourth round of the 2018 tennis French Open.

Maximilian Marterer is coming off a straight sets win over Jürgen Zopp that took 25 games to decide. In the victory, Marterer won 82 percent of his first serve points and 67 percent of his second serve points. Marterer cruised in his third round victory, winning 75 percent of his total service points and producing just 11 unforced errors. Marterer has won nine of his 10 sets played in this tournament and it’s by far the most success he’s had on the main tour at 22 years old. As long as Marterer can take care of his serve and put all the pressure on his opponent, he has a chance to be competitive in this match. Marterer has a chance to make his first ever grand slam quarterfinal appearance. Marterer has won seven of his last nine matches on clay court.

Rafael Nadal is coming off a straight sets win over Richard Gasquet that took 25 games to decide. In the victory, Nadal won 85 percent of his first serve points and 71 percent of his second serve points. Nadal hit 37 winners, had just 16 unforced errors and was broken just once in his effortless third round victory. Like last year, Nadal is chewing up and spitting out his opponents and there’s no reason to think this run is going to end anytime soon. Nadal is simply on another level than the rest of the field. Nadal hopes to make the quarterfinals of a grand slam for the fifth time in his last six tries. Nadal also hopes to make the quarters of the French Open for the 12th time in 14 appearances. Nadal has won 10 of his last 11 matches on clay court.

There’s no previous matches between these two.

Nadal isn’t really close to dropping a set these days in the French Open, let alone a match. It’s hard to see some wet behind the ears 22 year old with little to no grand slam experience be the guy to end this historic stretch.

Nadal reaches the quarters yet again.
