The Line: -- Over/Under:
Mihaela Buzarnescu and Ajla Tomljanovic meet in the quarterfinals of the 2018 tennis Stanford Classic.
Mihaela Buzarnescu is coming off a three sets win over Amanda Anisimova that took 27 games to decide. In the victory, Buzarnescu won 63 percent of her first serve points and 45 percent of her second serve points. Buzarnescu won 54 percent of her total service points and 55 percent of her return points. Buzarnescu produced eight breaks and gave herself 15 break points, which was obviously the difference in her victory. Buzarnescu has now produced a combined 16 breaks in her last two matches and has been highly aggressive with her return. However, Buzarnescu has to drastically improve her serve if she’s going to continue to advance as the competition increases. Buzarnescu has split her last six matches on hard court.
Ajla Tomljanovic is coming off a three sets win over Magdalena Frech that took 28 games to decide. In the victory, Tomljanovic won 65 percent of her first serve points and 43 percent of her second serve points. Tomljanovic didn’t have to play Madison Keys due to her withdrawing from the tournament, so she kind of got lucky in her most recent match. However, Tomljanovic still struggled with her serve, as she was broken five times and had 11 double faults. It goes without saying that Tomljanovic will have to play much better if she hopes to make it any deeper in this tournament. Still, Tomljanovic has managed to win 13 of her last 19 sets played when you throw in qualifying, so she’s finding ways to win despite not playing 100 percent great. Tomljanovic has won five of her last seven matches on hard court.
These two have played once, which was in Linz of last year, a match won in three sets. The match took 30 games to be decided.
Tomljanovic didn’t play well enough for me to consider her in this match, as she had nothing on her serve and nearly lost to somebody who was given short notice they would even be playing. Buzarnescu has had obvious serving issues of her own, but she’s been feisty with the return and has taken advantage of tons of break points. Against Tomljanovic, you can expect more of the same in this match.
Buzarnescu reaches the semifinals.
