The Line: -- Over/Under:
Mihaela Buzarnescu and Caroline Wozniacki meet in the third round of the 2019 tennis Charleston Open.
Mihaela Buzarnescu is coming off a straight sets win over Lauren Davis that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Buzarnescu won 81 percent of her first serve points and 39 percent of her second serve points. Buzarnescu won 63 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her six break points. Buzarnescu has put together back-to-back victories, which is quite impressive considering she entered this tournament losing 14 of her last 15 matches. Buzarnescu has been much improved with her first serve and has shown more confidence with her return as of late. Buzarnescu has a chance to win three straight matches for the first time since winning the Silicon Valley Classic back in August. Buzarnescu has won five of his last six matches on clay court.
Caroline Wozniacki is coming off a straight sets win over Laura Siegemund that took 16 games to decide. In the victory, Wozniacki won 60 percent of her first serve points and 59 percent of her second serve points. Wozniacki won 60 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her eight break points. Wozniacki put together one of her more complete matches of the season, as she’s been a bit shaky this season, which includes splitting her last 12 matches entering this tournament. As long as Wozniacki can get a high percentage of first serves in play, she should be fine. It’s when she’s not serving with any confidence is when Wozniacki is in trouble and capable of losing to just about anybody on tour. Wozniacki has won six of her last eight matches on clay court.
These two have played twice and Wozniacki won both matches in straight sets. The matches took place in last years Australian Open and the 2017 US Open. This will obviously be the first meeting on clay.
Wozniacki hasn’t put much success together this season, but she’s had zero trouble beating Buzarnescu in the previous two meetings and showed improvement with her serve. You could also argue nobody was struggling on the women’s side more than Buzarnescu, so while she’s won her last two matches, it’s hard to ignore the way she was playing entering this tournament. A few sets doesn’t change the whole outlook on her game.
Wozniacki should win this match in straight sets.
