The Line: -- Over/Under:
Mikhail Kukushkin and John Millman meet in the third round of the 2018 tennis US Open.
Mikhail Kukushkin is coming off a straight sets win over Hyeon Chung that took 30 games to decide. In the victory, Kukushkin won 60 percent of his first serve points and 50 percent of his second serve points. Kukushkin won a straight sets match despite winning just 56 percent of his total service points and being broken six times. Give Kukushkin credit for beating a top-25 player in a grand slam, but he must play a cleaner match if he hopes to advance any further. Kukushkin must do a better job with his serve if he’s going to survive another round. Kukushkin has a chance to make his second career grand slam fourth round appearance and first since the 2012 Australian Open. Kukushkin has won seven of his last nine matches on hard court.
John Millman is coming off a four sets win over Fabio Fognini that took 34 games to decide. In the victory, Millman won 71 percent of his first serve points and 56 percent of his second serve points. Millman won 66 percent of his total service points and converted on nine of his 11 break points. Millman did have 21 more unforced errors than winners, an area he obviously must clean up. Millman, however, has produced 16 breaks in his last two matches, which is the biggest positive for him right now. Millman has a chance to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time in his career. Millman is 0-3 in his career in grand slam third round matches. Millman has split his last four matches on hard court.
There’s no previous matches between these two players.
Both of these guys have been shaky with their serve, which makes this a tough match to call, as it comes down to who converts in the bigger points. I’m leaning with Millman here, as he’s been deadly with his return and has produced 16 breaks in his last two matches. With the way Kukushkin has been serving, he’s going to have a hard time in this match.
I like Millman to make his first ever grand slam fourth round.
