Mischa Zverev and Richard Gasquet meet in the third round of the 2018 tennis Monte Carlo Masters.

Mischa Zverev is coming off a three sets win over Lucas Pouille that took 28 games to decide. In the victory, Zverev won 69 percent of his first serve points and 50 percent of his second serve points. Zverev has needed six sets and two tiebreaks to get to this point and is having serious trouble with his second serve. Still, even with the hiccups and inconsistent play overall this year, Zverev is playing in the third match in a single tournament for the first time since Stockholm of 2017. Still, Zverev must be better with his serve if he’s going to make an even deeper run. Zverev hopes to make the quarterfinals of a ATP World Tour Masters 1000 for just the third time in his career. Zverev has split his last six matches on clay court.

Richard Gasquet is coming off a straight sets win over Diego Sebastian Schwartzman that took 15 games to decide. In the victory, Gasquet won 83 percent of his first serve points and 65 percent of his second serve points. Gasquet had an effortless second round victory, as he dropped just four first set points and won 53 percent of his return points. Gasquet has been able to turn his season around on clay court and should be rather fresh entering this match given the lack of wear and tear it took to get here. As long as Gasquet isn’t making silly unforced errors, he should be in good shape in this match. Gasquet hopes to make his second ATP World Tour Masters 1000 quarterfinal since 2016. Gasquet has won five of his last six matches on clay court.

These two have played once, which was in the 2016 Shenzhen Open, a match Gasquet won in straight sets. The match took 26 games to be decided.

The one time these two played, it went to two tiebreaks, so this could be another close one. The bottom line is Zverev usually fizzles out around this time on the big stage no matter how well he’s playing, and his serve hasn’t been consistent. Gasquet is playing his best tennis this season the last couple of weeks and will see plenty of break points.

I like Gasquet to reach the quarterfinals.

Pick:
Richard Gasquet
