Mona Barthel and Venus Williams meet in the fourth round of the 2019 tennis Indian Wells.
Mona Barthel is coming off a three sets win over Julia Goerges that took 29 games to decide. In the victory, Barthel won 67 percent of her first serve points and 29 percent of her second serve points. Barthel won 49 percent of her total service points and converted on six of her 16 break points. Barthel has played nine sets to get this point and has been broken a combined 16 times. While you have to give Barthel credit for finding a way to advance, she must be better with her serve if she’s going to advance any further. Barthel has a chance to win four matches in a single tournament for the first time since a challenger tournament in Chicago back in September. Barthel has won five of her last eight matches on outdoor hard court.
Venus Williams is coming off a straight sets win over Christina McHale that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Venus won 59 percent of her first serve points and 52 percent of her second serve points. Venus won 56 percent of her total service points and converted on seven of her nine break points. Venus continues to be spotty with her serve, but she was in control of that match from start to finish and has been aggressive with her return. As long as Venus has her return working and is spraying winners, you can live with an inconsistent serve and a higher number of break points. Venus hopes to make the quarterfinals of Indian Wells for the sixth time in her career. Venus has won five of her last six matches on outdoor hard court.
These two have played three times and Venus has won all three matches in straight sets. The most recent match was in the 2017 Australian Open. The other two matches took place in 2013 and 2012.
I’ve been hard on Venus and her questionable serve and unforced errors in the past, but that’s not much of an issue here when you consider Barthel is serving even worse. Barthel has been able to get away with it up to this point, but that won’t fly against Venus and her powerful return. Throw in the head to head history, and you have the recipe for what should be another comfortable win for the American.
Venus cruises to the quarterfinals of Indian Wells.
