Monica Puig and Petra Kvitova meet in the semifinals of the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics.
Monica Puig is coming off a straight sets victory over Laura Siegemund that took 14 games to decide. Puig has been the surprise on the women’s side of the tournament, as she’s been able to take her game to another level and is making very little errors. After all, Puig has lost just four games in her last two matches combined. Turning 23 years old next month, Puig is a player who is growing before our very eyes. A win here and Puig would be guarantee to be the first Puerto Rican woman to win either a gold or silver medal in olympic singles tennis. Puig has won seven of her last eight matches on hard court.
Petra Kvitova is coming off a straight sets win over Elina Svitolina that took 14 games to decide. Kvitova has dropped just one set this tournament and has won her last four sets in a row. Kvitova was hit or miss entering this tournament, but she’s been far more consistent lately and is looking more and more like the top-10 player we’ve seen from her over the years. The experience in these type of matches also helps considering Kvitova did make the quarterfinals of the 2012 olympics. A win here and Kvitova would guarantee to become the first Czech woman to win either gold or silver in olympic singles tennis. Kvitova has won 10 of her last 13 matches on hard court.
This will be the first time these two meet on the tennis court.
Kvitova is probably the more polished player and has more experience, however, Puig has been playing better tennis this tournament and has lost just four games in her last two matches combined. I don’t care who you’re playing against, that’s ridiculous. I think Puig is worth backing here given the way she’s played up to this point.
I like the Puerto Rican to reach the olympic gold medal match.
