Naomi Osaka and Camila Giorgi meet in the semifinals of the 2018 tennis Pan Pacific Open.

Naomi Osaka is coming off a straight sets win over Barbora Strycova that took 19 games to decide. In the victory, Osaka won 80 percent of her first serve points and 48 percent of her second serve points. Osaka won 65 percent of her total service points and converted on all three of her break points. Osaka has now won nine straight matches and has also won 18 of her last 19 sets. Osaka went from being an emotional, but talented teenager who would allow matches to slip away from her to being mentally tough and dominating whoever you put in front of her. With her shotmaking ability and her more consistent serve, Osaka is going to make deep tournament runs for the next decade-plus rather easily. Osaka has a chance to make her third final appearance of the year and her fourth final appearance of her career. Osaka has won her last three matches on indoor hard court.

Camila Giorgi is coming off a one set win over Victoria Azarenka that took eight games to decide. In the victory, Giorgi won 75 percent of her first serve points and 63 percent of her second serve points. Giorgi won 70 percent of her total service points and broke twice before Azarenka was forced to retire due to an illness. Giorgi has now won eight of her last 10 matches when you include qualifying, and she should be well rested considering she only had to play 30 minutes in her quarterfinal match. With 11 breaks in this tournament, Giorgi has a chance to putt off the upset if she can continue to be aggressive with her return and keep the ball in play. Giorgi hopes to make her sixth career final appearance and the first since the 2016 Katowice Open. Giorgi has won five of her last six matches on indoor hard court.

There’s no previous matches between these two players.

Giorgi is a more than respectable opponent who is fresh and returning well. The problem is Osaka is the hottest player in the world right now and making it tough to bet against her with the way she’s serving and powering everybody off the court. This isn’t a fluke, as most knew Osaka had the talent to become one of the top players in the world, it was a matter of cleaning up unforced errors and improving her nerves. Well, Osaka is here now.

Osaka makes her third final appearance of the year.
