Naomi Osaka and Coco Gauff meet in the third round of the 2019 tennis US Open..
Naomi Osaka is coming off a straight sets win over Magda Linette that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Osaka won 83 percent of her first serve points and 59 percent of her second serve points. Osaka won 70 percent of her total service points and converted on four of her six break points. Osaka got 46 percent of her first serves in play, saved three of her four break points and hit two aces. It hasn’t been the cleanest performances from Osaka and her first serve percentage could improve, but she’s finding ways to grind out victories, which is all that matters. Osaka hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the fourth time in her last eight tries. Osaka has won six of her last eight matches on hard court.
Coco Gauff is coming off a three sets win over Timea Babos that took 28 games to decide. In the victory, Gauff won 83 percent of her first serve points and 50 percent of her second serve points. Gauff won 69 percent of her total service points and converted on four of her 12 break points. Gauff got 57 percent of her first serves in play, saved four of her six break points and hit nine aces. It’s been up and down for Gauff this tournament, but the 15-year-old continues to show poise and find a way to win matches. The composure of Gauff is going to take her quite far in this sport, as there’s top players with years under their belts who completely fold in pressure situations. Gauff looks to make her second career grand slam fourth round appearance. Gauff has never beaten a top-10 player in the world. Gauff has won four of her last five matches on hard court.
There’s no match history between these two players.
There’s reason for concern in this match, as we saw Anastasia Potapova push Gauff around with her power, and Osaka obviously has the ability to do the same thing. Gauff has to mix it up with finesse if she’s going to win this match, as she can’t hit with Osaka. With that said, everybody knows Osaka has struggled all year long and allows opponents to hang around, if not steal a victory. Gauff and the belief she has in herself could be just enough to pull this off. Osaka hasn’t been herself this year.
I’ll take Gauff to get the biggest win of her young career.
