The Line: -- Over/Under:
Japanese tennis superstar, Naomi Osaka is set to play at the 2019 WTA Rogers Cup in Toronto. Osaka will begin her tournament in the second round where she will play against Tatjana Maria from Germany.
Naomi Osaka automatically made it through to the second round as she received a bye in the opening round due to her high seeding. Naomi Osaka has been in terrible form as she has failed to make a quarterfinal appearance since the Italian Open which was in May. Osaka last played at Wimbledon where she was eliminated in the opening round. Osaka looked hugely low on confidence during her loss at Wimbledon as she lost in straight sets. Moving onto the hard-court season should be a boost for Naomi Osaka as most of her success has been on this surface. Osaka has won the US Open and the Australian Open in the past 12 months. This will be a challenging match for Osaka as Maria is a very experienced opponent.
On the other side of the coin, Tatjana Maria enters this match having won her previous match in straight sets. Maria was very impressive during the match, especially with her receiving. Tatjana Maria won 48% of her receiving points which allowed her to break her opponent’s serve on 4 occasions. The serving was also solid from Tatjana Maria as she won 80% of her service games. Tatjana Maria looks in good form and she will be confident in her ability to challenge Naomi Osaka.
Tatjana Maria and Naomi Osaka have played each other twice in the past with both players winning on one occasion. The most recent match between these two players was in 2016 at the China Open where Tatjana Maria won in straight sets.
Naomi Osaka is a terrific player and she has proven herself at big tournaments. That being said, Osaka looks very low on confidence and she seems to be struggling with the pressure of being a highly ranked player. Tatjana Maria is a hugely accomplished and she is a very solid tennis player. I see Osaka’s confidence issue costing her another match as Tatjana Maria gets the victory.
