The Line: -- Over/Under:
Japanese tennis superstar, Naomi Osaka will start her campaign at Wimbledon against Yulia Putintseva.
Yulia Putintseva has had a decent start to the grass court season. Putistseva made the quarterfinals of the Birmingham Classic and the second round of the Eastbourne International. 2019 has been a strong season for Yulia Putintseva as she won her first WTA tournament at the Nuremberg Cup in Germany.
While she has shown positive signs this season, Yulia Putintseva does not have a good record on grass. As it currently stands, Yulia Putintseva has only won 38% of her matches on grass. This is expected to be a very tough fixture of Putintseva as she is playing against the number 2 seed.
Looking at Naomi Osaka, the Japanese superstar has had a significant drop in form since winning the Australian Open. Osaka has only made it to one semifinal since the Australian Open which is very poor considering her ranking. Naomi Osaka started her grass court season at the Birmingham Classic where she was eliminated following her second match.
The expectations on Naomi Osaka have been huge since her Australian Open victory and she has not been able to play at that level. Osaka’s record on grass is not outstanding as she has only 58% of her matches on this surface. Osaka’s best performance at Wimbledon has been making the third round.
Naomi Osaka and Yulia Putintseva have played each other twice in the past. Surprisingly, Putintseva has won on both occasions. Yulia Putintseva was the player who eliminated Naomi Osaka at the Birmingham Classic this season. The first match between these two players as at the Hobart International where Yulia Putintseva won in straight sets. Osaka is yet to win a set against Yulia Putintseva.
I have not been impressed with Naomi Osaka since the Australian Open and this seems like the perfect spot for a top player to be eliminated early. Yulia Putintseva has a 2-0 record against Osaka and she will be confident as she defeated the number 2 seed only weeks ago. Yulia Putintseva has played well over the past few weeks and I see her causing a major upset in the opening round.
