Nick Kyrgios and Andreas Seppi will clash in the second round of the US Open on Wednesday.
Andreas Seppi had a fairly painless victory in the first round of the tournament, beating Sergiy Stakhovsky in three sets and not having to play more than 10 games per set. Seppi has had a real up-and-down season and besides his success in Winston-Salem, he hasn’t really accomplished much that will help improve his current ranking of No. 48 in the world. You also have to worry about Andreas Seppi playing doubles as well in the US Open, as fatigue is surely going to be a factor heading into this match. Still, although Seppi is creeping up there in age at 30 years old and is clearly struggling this year, he has reached at least the third round in five of his last seven grand slam appearances. Andreas Seppi is an experienced player who shouldn’t be taken lightly.
Nick Kyrgios had a little more trouble with his opponent, as he needed four sets and two tiebreaks to defeat Mikhail Youzhny. Some may call it nerves considering Kyrgios is still only 19 years old, but this is somebody who just reached the quarterfinals of the Wimbledon. Not exactly the start anybody was hoping for if you’re a fan of Nick Kyrgios. However, Kyrgios only participated in the Canadian Masters since the Wimbledon, so maybe he was shaking rust. Either way, Kyrgios advanced to the second round of the US Open for the first time in his career and is a dangerous threat to make some noise if he can get his form back at an elite level. Nick Kyrgios is also double dipping at this tournament, so fatigue is also something to look out for before wagering this match.
This will be the first time these two have ever played one another.
Andreas Seppi has the huge experience edge over Nick Kyrgios, but the 19-year-old is by far the better tennis player and has held his own this season against some of the biggest names in tennis such as Andy Murray.
Look for Nick Kyrgios to advance in another match that takes four sets to be decided.
