Nick Kyrgios and Kyle Edmund meet in the first round of the 2019 tennis Rogers Centre.

Nick Kyrgios is fresh off winning the Citi Open title where he served at an elite level and won 12 of his 13 sets. If that tournament is a sign of things to come, Kyrgios may have turned the corner and is somebody who should be considered a contender for any tournament he enters. Of course, you just never know when Kyrgios is going to take a match seriously or when things are going to unravel, so it’s kind of a hide and watch approach here. Kyrgios was also battling a leg injury in the final, so his health is also a question entering this tournament. Kyrgios has won eight of his last nine matches on hard court.

Kyle Edmund is coming off a quarterfinal appearance in Washington and has won five of his last eight matches overall. It’s been an up and down season for Edmund, as he’s lost matches he probably shouldn’t have lost and has fallen apart in second and third sets. Edmund has been on the wrong side of some crushing losses lately and it makes it even worse with him being the crowd favorite in those matches. Maybe getting out of the UK and returning to the hard court will be good for the 24-year-old. When Edmund has his confidence back, he’s more than capable of being a tough out regardless of opponent. Edmund has won four of his last six matches on hard court.

These two have played twice and Kyrgios has won both meetings, including the most recent in 2018 London. This will be the first match on hard court.

Edmund is good enough to make this a match, but he’s been so hit or miss this season he’s hard to trust. I’m not sure how anybody can see what Kyrgios just did in Washington and bet against him here. As long as the leg isn’t an issue for the Aussie, he should have no problem at all continuing this hot streak. Kyrgios is locked in and it’s exciting for tennis fans who have been begging for him to put everything together.

Kyrgios cruises to the next round if he’s healthy.
