Nick Kyrgios and Radek Stepanek square off early in the first round of the 2016 Wimbledon.

Nick Kyrgios hopes to find his form early in this tournament after splitting his last eight matches. Kyrgios lost in the first round of the AEGON Championships and had an early exit in the French Open. Despite the recent struggles, this has been a breakthrough season for Kyrgios, as he’s a top-20 player for the first time of his career and won his first title at the Open 13. Kyrgios seems more focused this season and less interested in pleasing the crowd and being a distraction of the sport. Kyrgios has been eliminated in the first round of a grand slam twice since 2014. Kyrgios has split his last eight matches on grass.

Radek Stepanek makes his sixth straight Wimbledon performance and will double dip with his partner Nenad Zimonjic. Stepanek has been in decent form recently with wins in 10 of his last 14 matches when you include qualifying. Stepanek just made the quarterfinals of the Mercedes Cup and that included a win over a top-15 player in Marin Cilic. Stepanek is a guy way past his prime as he approaches 38 years old, but he’s still somebody who competes hard and is more than capable of beating good competition if not taken seriously. Stepanek has advanced past the first round of a grand slam four times since 2014. Stepanek has split his last 10 matches on grass.

These two have met once in the past, which was the 2013 French Open, a match Kyrgios won in straight sets. The match took 38 games to decide.

This could be one of the more entertaining first round matches if Stepanek is able to keep up. Kyrgios is as focused as we’ve seen possibly ever, and his play has improved drastically.

Stepanek could take a set, but Kyrgios is the one to advance to the second round.
