Serbian tennis legend Novak Djokovic will be playing at the 2019 ATP Japan Open in Tokyo. The world number 1 will begin his tournament against Alex Popyrin from Australia.

Alex Popyrin enters this tournament via the qualifiers. The Australian was solid during the qualifiers as he won both matches with ease. Prior to arriving in Japan, Popyrin played at the Chengdu Open where he was eliminated by Fernando Verdasco. It has been a modest few months for Alex Popyrin as his best result has been a quarter-final appearance at the Atlanta Open. This is expected to be a tough match for Alex Popyrin as he is playing against the number 1 seed.

Looking at Novak Djokovic, the Serbian superstar will be playing his first tournament since the US Open. Novak Djokovic was forced to retire from the US Open due to injury and while he is not at 100% fitness, the Serbian superstar looked good during his practice session. Novak Djokovic was in outstanding form prior to the US Open as he made the semifinals of the Cincinnati Masters and won Wimbledon. This tournament will be about Novak Djokovic regaining fitness for the Shanghai Masters. Novak Djokovic will be hoping to finish the season strongly and proving his fitness will be vital.

This will be the first time that Novak Djokovic and Alex Popyrin will be playing at an ATP event.

Alex Popyrin will be hoping to capitalize on Djokovic’s injury and cause a major upset. That being said, I see Novak Djokovic winning this match. Djokovic is a significantly stronger player than Popyrin and I don’t see the Serbian playing this tournament if he wasn’t fit enough to win. Novak Djokovic looked good during the practice season and I see him having enough fitness to beat Alex Popyrin in straight sets.
