The Line: -- Over/Under:
Novak Djokovic and Borna Coric meet in the final of the 2018 tennis Shanghai Masters.
Novak Djokovic is coming off a straight sets win over Alexander Zverev that took 15 games to decide. In the victory, Djokovic won 79 percent of his first serve points and 54 percent of his second serve points. Djokovic won 72 percent of his total service points and didn’t face a single break point. Djokovic has won all eight sets this tournament and hasn’t been broken once. Take away his loss in the Laver Cup, which is considered an exhibition anyway, Djokovic has won 24 straight sets. Just lights out stuff from the 31-year-old. Djokovic has a chance to win his fourth title of the year and his 72nd title of his career. Djokovic has won 15 of his last 20 final appearances overall and is 53-17 in career final appearances on hard court. Djokovic has a chance to win the Shanghai Masters for the fourth time and has won seven of his last nine ATP World Tour Masters 1000 final appearances. Djokovic has won 17 straight matches on hard court.
Borna Coric is coming off a straight sets win over Roger Federer that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Coric won 84 percent of his first serve points and 73 percent of his second serve points. Coric won 82 percent of his total service points and didn’t face a single break point in his victory. Coric has now won nine straight sets and hasn’t faced a single break point in his last four matches. If Coric is capable of repeating these serving performances, he gives himself a fair shot to win the biggest title of his career. In terms of who he’s beaten and the stage he’s on, this is some of the best tennis we’ve seen from Coric up to this point. Coric has a chance to win his second title of the year and his third title of his career. Coric is 2-2 in final appearances overall and 0-1 in final appearances on hard court. Coric has a chance at his first ever ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title. Coric has won eight of his last 11 matches on hard court.
These two have played twice and Djokovic has won both meetings in straight sets. The matches took place in this years Monte Carlo Masters and the 2016 Madrid Masters. This will obviously be the first time these two meet on hard court.
Coric has really grown up this tournament and is playing some of his most consistent, cleanest tennis. And while Coric is capable of winning a title given his current form, I’m not sure betting against Djokovic, a guy who has won 27 straight sets on the main course, is a bright idea. Yes, Coric has been kind to us in the underdog role this tournament and has taken major steps in terms of consistency, but betting against Djokovic in a final, with him playing at this level, just isn’t an option for me.
Djokovic wins his 72nd career title.
