The Line: Djokovic -8000 / Istomin +2500 -- Over/Under:
Novak Djokovic and Denis Istomin meet in the second round of the 2017 Australian Open.
Novak Djokovic is coming off a straight sets win over Fernando Verdasco that took 28 games to decide. In the victory, Djokovic won 76 percent of his first serve points and 50 percent of his second serve points. Djokovic looked sharp in his opening round victory, but could improve the fact he had 34 unforced errors and 24 winners. Overall, Djokovic is off to a very strong 2017 season and has won 13 of his last 15 sets played. If the injuries are really a thing of the past and he was able to clear his head from last season’s late struggles, Djokovic should be considered the favorite to win this tournament. Djokovic hasn’t lost before the third round of a grand slam since the 2008 Wimbledon. Djokovic has won six straight matches on hard court.
Denis Istomin is coming off a four sets win over Ivan Dodig that took 38 games to decide. In the victory, Istomin won 78 percent of his first serve points and 46 percent of his second serve points. Istomin was in control of his opening match from start to finish, as he hit 45 winners and converted six of nine break attempts. Istomin has never had much success on the grand slam stage, but a convincing victory where he was aggressive and hit his spots should inspire some confidence heading into this match. Istomin hopes to make the third round of a grand slam for the fourth time since 2014. Istomin has won six of his last eight matches on hard court.
These two have played five times and Djokovic has won all five meetings, four of which have been decided in straight sets. The most recent match was in 2014 in Dubai, a match that took 18 games to decide. Istomin’s only set win over Djokovic came in the 2013 Canadian Masters.
Istomin has had no success against Djokovic and has never been a player who performs well on the grand slam stage. This should be a rather easy victory for the No. 2 player in the world, as Djokovic wins this match in straight sets.
