Novak Djokovic and Dominic Thiem square off in the semifinal of the 2016 French Open.
Novak Djokovic is coming off a straight sets win over Tomas Berdych that took 30 games to decide. In the victory, Djokovic won 71 percent of his first serve points and 66 percent of his second serve points. Djokovic has still lost just one set this tournament and has played just 68 games in his last two matches. Djokovic has racked up 75 winners and 76 unforced errors in his last two matches. Even with the errors, Djokovic is still in control of his matches and the only thing that may slow him down is the workload due to so many matches in a row because of the rain delays. Djokovic hopes to make his sixth straight grand slam final and has a chance at his fourth career French Open final.
Dominic Thiem is coming off a four set win over David Goffin that took 40 games to decide. In the victory, Thiem won 66 percent of his first serve points and 49 percent of his second serve points. Thiem has lost just four sets this tournament and has played 78 games in his last two matches. Thiem has won at least 70 percent of his first serve points in four of his five matches and has produced 104 winners in his last two matches. Thiem continues his breakout season and has a shot to become a top-10 player at just 22 years old. Thiem does have three wins over top-10 players this season, including a win over Roger Federer in the Italian Open. Thiem has a chance to reach his first career grand slam final.
These two have met twice in the past, and Djokovic has won both meetings in straight sets. The most recent match was in this year's Miami Masters, a match that was decided in 19 games. The other match was in the 2014 Shanghai Masters.
Thiem is playing the best tennis of his life and has to be confident given his recent success against top-10 players. However, Djokovic is a massive step up from the players he’s played in this tournament. Thiem has played just one ranked player up to this point. You just can’t bet against Djokovic.
Look for Djokovic to make his sixth straight grand slam final.
