The Line: Hurkacz +1190 / Djokovic -1610 -- Over/Under:
Novak Djokovic and Hubert Hurkacz meet in the first round of the 2019 tennis French Open.
Novak Djokovic enters this tournament winning 11 of his last 13 matches and just took Rafael Nadal to three competitive sets in Rome, so he should be feeling good about his chances. Djokovic has figured things out serving wise and has been able to dig deep time and time again to win those key points that really determine the outcome. The only concern I have with Djokovic in this event is fatigue, as he’s played nine matches this month and some of those in Rome were extremely physical. Throw in at last three grand slam sets, and Djokovic could breakdown if the first few rounds aren’t quick and painless. Djokovic hasn’t lost in the first round of a grand slam since the 2006 Australian Open. Djokovic has won 11 of his last 13 matches on clay court.
Hubert Hurkacz enters this tournament losing his last three matches when you include Rome qualifying, and he’s coming off a loss in Lyon where he won just 24 percent of his return points. Hurkacz had a stretch earlier this year on hard court where he was turning some heads and beating quality competition, but hs clearly not the same player at the moment. Hurkacz better find himself soon if he’s going to make this match worthwhile. Hurkacz has three career wins over top-10 players and all of those wins came this year. Hurkacz hopes to make the second round of a grand slam for the third time. Hurkacz has split his last six matches on clay court.
There’s no match history between these two players.
Hurkacz has lost his mojo on clay court and is now running into the guy who is second in terms of odds to win this tournament. Djokovic is playing his best and most consistent tennis of the year right now and knows he needs to finish these early matches quickly to gain a rest advantage on the rest of the field. Djokovic can’t afford to play around in the early rounds given his heavy workload as of late.
Give me Djokovic in straight sets.
