Novak Djokovic and Hubert Hurkacz meet in the third round of the 2019 tennis Wimbledon.
Novak Djokovic is coming off a straight sets win over Denis Kudla that took 25 games to decide. In the victory, Djokovic won 80 percent of his first serve points and 52 percent of his second serve points. Djokovic won 71 percent of his total service points and converted on seven of his 13 break points. Djokovic got 67 percent of his first serves in play, saved three of his five break points and hit 13 aces. Each of Djokovic’s last eight victories have been decided in straight sets. Djokovic has been bounced before the fourth round of a grand slam just twice since 2010. Djokovic has won three of his last four matches on grass court.
Hubert Hurkacz is coming off a four sets win over Leonardo Mayer that took 42 games to decide. In the victory, Hurkacz won 74 percent of his first serve points and 56 percent of his second serve points. Hurkacz won 69 percent of his total service points and converted on four of his eight break points. Hurkacz got 70 percent of his first serves in play, saved three of his four break points and hit nine aces. Hurkacz showed great fight after dropping an opening set tiebreak, and he’s won both matches in four sets. First serve percentage will continue to be key for the 22-year-old from Poland. Hurkacz hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time in his career. Hurkacz has three career wins over top-10 players, all of which have come this year. Hurkacz has won four of his last five matches on grass court.
These two played once, which was in this years French Open, a match Djokovic won in straight sets. The match took 26 games to be decided.
Hurkacz serves well enough to where he could make this match competitive and force a somewhat lengthy three set match. That’s about it. Djokovic had no trouble in their previous match this year, and you can argue he’s playing even better right now.
Hurkacz is a rising star and a hard hitter who can be tough to play, but he’s not seasoned enough to beat or scare Djokovic on this stage.
