Novak Djokovic and Jan-Lennard Struff meet in the fourth round of the 2019 tennis French Open.
Novak Djokovic is coming off a straight sets win over Salvatore Caruso that took 26 games to decide. In the victory, Djokovic won 85 percent of his first serve points and 52 percent of his second serve points. Djokovic won 75 percent of his total service points and converted on five of his 11 break points. Djokovic got 69 percent of his first serves in play and saved all five of his break points. Djokovic has won all nine sets this tournament and has kept the matches extremely short, which is key to him making a title run. Djokovic has to stay as fresh as possible for the later rounds. Djokovic hopes to make the quarterfinals of a grand slam for the seventh time in his last eight tries. Djokovic hasn’t lost before the quarterfinals of the French Open since 2009. Djokovic has won 12 of his last 13 matches on clay court.
Jan-Lennard Struff is coming off a five sets win over Borna Coric that took 60 games to decide. In the victory, Struff won 76 percent of his first serve points and 57 percent of his second serve points. Struff won 67 percent of his total service points and converted on five of his eight break points. Struff produced 21 aces and 66 winners overall to win what was nearly a four and a half hour match. It’s the first time Struff has ever made the fourth round in a grand slam and while that’s a career accomplishment, it’s fair to question how much he has left for this match. Struff has played nine sets and nearly eight hours of tennis in his last two matches. Struff has five career wins over top-10 players with three of those wins coming this year. Struff hopes to make his first career grand slam quarterfinal. Struff has won five of his last six matches on clay court.
These two have played once, which was in Doha of 2017, a match Djokovic won in straight sets. The match was decided in 22 games.
Djokovic is cruising and winning matches comfortably, while Struff is enjoying his grand slam breakthrough at 29 years old but has played a ton of tennis to get to this point. Conditioning has a lot to do with grand slam success on the men’s side, as early exits are going to take place when guys are playing four and five hour matches. Struff is going to have a hard time keeping up with the pace of Djokovic.
Djokovic wins another match in straight sets.
