The Line: Sousa +2100 / Djokovic -4000 -- Over/Under:
Novak Djokovic and Joao Sousa meet in the second round of the 2017 French Open.
Novak Djokovic is coming off a straight sets win over Marcel Granollers that took 27 games to decide. In the victory, Djokovic won 62 percent of his first serve points and 62 percent of his second serve points. Djokovic still looks like Djokovic on clay court, as he won 52 percent of his return points in his first round victory and had 30 winners. Djokovic has now won 14 of his last 18 sets and will remain tough to beat if he continues to serve as well as he’s currently serving. Djokovic has been bounced before the third round of a grand slam just once since 2010. Djokovic hopes to make the third round of the French Open for a 12th straight time. Djokovic has won eight of his last 10 matches on clay court.
Joao Sousa is coming off a four set win over Janko Tipsarevic that took 39 games to decide. In the victory, Sousa won 68 percent of his first serve points and 47 percent of his second serve points. Sousa finally got a victory on clay and it's his first since his win over Florian Mayer in the Monte Carlo Masters. In order to shock the world while earning his third win over a top-10 player, Sousa must play cleaner tennis, as he had 41 unforced errors and five double faults in his opening victory. Sousa hopes to make the third round of a grand slam for the sixth time in his career. Sousa has never made the third round of the French Open. Sousa has lost six of his last seven matches on clay court.
These two have played three times, and Djokovic has won all three meetings in straight sets. The most recent match was in the 2016 Miami Masters, a match Djokovic won in 17 games. This will be their second meeting on clay court.
Sousa has not had an easy go on clay this season and had his struggles with a player ranked 71st in the first round. When you throw in the way Djokovic is playing and the massive head to head advantage even though there’s not been a ton of matches, there’s no way you can predict an upset with any confidence.
Djokovic wins this match in straight sets.
