The Line: Djokovic -5000 / Granollers +1600 -- Over/Under:
Novak Djokovic and Marcel Granollers meet in the first round of the 2017 French Open.
Novak Djokovic is coming off a finals appearance in the Rome Masters and seems to have found his rhythm at the right time. Djokovic has won 12 of his last 16 matches overall and has won eight of his last 10 sets played. It wasn't that long ago when people were questioning if Djokovic lost a step given his struggles, but his current form has quieted those critics and makes him a reasonable favorite to win this tournament. Djokovic just has to be sharper on his second serve in order to make a deep French Open run. Djokovic hasn't lost a first round grand slam match since the 2006 Australian Open. Djokovic has won seven of his last nine matches on clay court.
Marcel Granollers is just trying to find his form considering he's won just one match since Indian Wells Masters, and that lone victory came in Barcelona against Malek Jaziri. Granollers is not playing well to put it nicely, but he can't be underestimated considering he was once a top-20 player in the world and is a highly successful doubles player with terrific net skills. If Granollers can put pressure on Djokovic early and hold his serve, he’ll have a shot to make this a longer than expected first round match. Granollers has lost in the first round of a grand slam twice since 2014. Granollers has six career wins over top-10 players with the most recent coming last season. Granollers has lost nine of his last 10 matches on clay court.
These two have played three times and Djokovic has won all three meetings in straight sets. The most recent match was in the 2013 Shanghai Masters, a match Djokovic won in 14 games. In eight sets played, Granollers has won a combined 10 games against Djokovic.
Even with Djokovic being hit or miss since late last year, there's no reason to pick against him even with a big payout in a upset. Granollers has done nothing against him during their few meetings, and Novak shows up in grand slams.
Have to expect a quick three set match.
