The Line: -- Over/Under:
Novak Djokovic and Nikoloz Basilashvili and meet in the second round of the 2018 tennis Rome Masters.
Novak Djokovic is coming off a straight sets win over Alexandr Dolgopolov that took 16 games to decide. In the victory, Djokovic won 80 percent of his first serve points and 67 percent of his second serve points. Djokovic has been hit or miss all season long, but he’s coming off a solid showing in which he dropped just six first serve points and won 52 percent of his return points. Djokovic has shown flashes recently of returning to form and being a respectable player again who can make deep tournament runs, but they’re just that; flashes. We need to start seeing some consistency before Djokovic before we can truly start laying some money on him in big matches. Djokovic hopes to win two matches in a single tournament for just the second time in his last six tournaments. Djokovic has split his last eight matches on clay court.
Nikoloz Basilashvili is coming off a straight sets win over Filippo Baldi that took 30 games to decide. In the victory, Basilashvili won 69 percent of his first serve points and 63 percent of his second serve points. Basilashvili managed to get 70 percent of his first serves in play and won 67 percent of his total service points, a percentage he must keep if he has a chance to win this match as well. Basilashvili has now played nine sets just to get to this point, and while he’s grinder out victories, he still has to take his game to another level if he’s going to start competing with the big boys. Basilashvili does a good job against players outside of the top-100, but doesn’t have many recent quality victories. Basilashvili has made the third round of a ATP World Tour Masters 1000 just once in his career. Basilashvili has won five of his last six matches on clay court.
This will be the first match between these two players.
Despite Djokovic’s inconsistencies, he should win this match. Basilashvili has been decent on clay this season, but that success has come against subpar players. Basilashvilihas zero career success on the big stage and usually folds when he plays players who are better than him. There’s also a rest advantage, as Basilashvili has played a lot of long three setters just to get to this point.
