The Line: -- Over/Under:
Novak Djokovic and Richard Gasquet meet in the third round of the 2018 tennis US Open.
Novak Djokovic is coming off a four sets win over Tennys Sandgren that took 37 games to decide. In the victory, Djokovic won 70 percent of his first serve points and 58 percent of his second serve points. Djokovic won 67 percent of his total service points and saved two of his three break points. Djokovic has been solid with his serve in both of his matches, but still has room for improvement considering he’s given a set away both times. Djokovic can clean up the combined 62 unforced errors he’s had up to this point. Djokovic hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for his sixth straight appearance. Djokovic hasn’t lost before the fourth round of the US Open since 2006. Djokovic has won eight straight matches on hard court.
Richard Gasquet is coming off a straight sets win over Laslo Djere that took 31 games to decide. In the victory, Gasquet won 77 percent of his first serve points and 50 percent of his second serve points. Gasquet won 69 percent of his total service points and saved all 12 of his break points. Gasquet entered this tournament losing three of his last four matches, and while he hasn’t played flawless tennis, he looks more like the crafty Gasquet that we’re used to seeing. Gasquet hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time since the 2016 Wimbledon. Gasquet has made the fourth round of the US Open six times in his 13 career appearances. Gasquet has lost three of his last five matches on hard court.
These two have played 14 times and Djokovic has won 13 of those meetings. The most recent match was in the 2015 Wimbledon, a match Djokovic won in straight sets. Djokovic has won the last 11 matches against Gasquet.
Gasquet isn’t the same player he was a couple of years ago, and he’s struggled to put together big tournament runs. And you can breakdown Djokovic and his improvement all you want, but the head to head numbers between these two guys is eye popping. In 14 tries, Gasquet has just one win against Djokovic, and most of those losses weren’t close.
