Novak Djokovic and Roberto Bautista-Agut meet in the semifinal of the 2019 tennis Wimbledon.
Novak Djokovic is coming off a straight sets win over David Goffin that took 24 games to decide. In the victory, Djokovic won 76 percent of his first serve points and 50 percent of his second serve points. Djokovic won 65 percent of his total service points and converted on seven of his 10 break points. Djokovic got 59 percent of his first serves in play, saved five of his six break points and had just 17 unforced errors. Djokovic has now won each of his last eight sets and seems to be getting stronger with his performances, as he lost a combined two games in the final two sets of his last match. Djokovic hopes to make a grand slam final for the fourth time in his last five appearances and his sixth career Wimbledon final appearance. Djokovic has won 10 of his last 11 matches on grass court.
Roberto Bautista-Agut is coming off a four sets win over Guido Pella that took 40 games to decide. In the victory, Bautista-Agut won 71 percent of his first serve points and 58 percent of his second serve points. Bautista-Agut won 66 percent of his total service points and converted on four of his 16 break points. Bautista-Agut got 66 percent of his first serves in play, saved 11 of his 13 break points and hit 42 winners. Bautista-Agut has won 15 of his 16 sets this tournament and has to like his chances if he can just clean up the unforced errors. Bautista-Agut hopes to make his first career grand slam final appearance and his 17th final appearance of his career overall. Bautista-Agut has 11 career wins over top-10 players, with four of those wins coming this year. Bautista-Agut has won eight of his last 10 matches on grass court.
These two have played 10 times and Djokovic has won seven of those matches. However, Bautista-Agut has won the last two meetings against Djokovic, both coming this year in Miami and Doha. Five of the 10 meetings have been decided in straight sets and this will be the first match on grass.
Bautista-Agut should head into this match with a ton of confidence considering he’s beaten Djokovic twice this year and has won three of the last five meetings overall. With that said, Djokovic is in much better shape than he was four months ago, and he’s playing much cleaner. Bautista-Agut can control the pace a lot in this match, but he also piles on the unforced errors at times, and that’s all Novak needs to create distance in the scoreboard.
This match will test Djokovic more than he has up to this point, but I still like him in straight sets.
