The Line: -- Over/Under:
Novak Djokovic and Rogerio Dutra Silva meet in the first round of the 2018 tennis French Open.
Novak Djokovic is coming off his most successful tournament of the season in which he made the semifinals of the Rome Masters before losing to Rafael Nadal in three tight sets. Djokovic has been trying to find his form and return to being the quality player he once was, but he’s been battling nagging injuries and just never was able to regain confidence. Well, the Djokovic we just saw is capable of a big run in this tournament and is capable of taking his game to even higher heights. Djokovic hasn’t lost in the first round of a grand slam since the 2006 Australian Open. Djokovic has won five of his last seven matches on clay.
Rogerio Dutra Silva enters this tournament just 5-9 on the main tour and is a combined 15-30 on the main tour dating back to last season. Silva is a 34-year-old Brazilian who has simply never gotten that big break and has very little success in big tournaments. However, Silva isn’t a player you can overlook, especially on clay, as he did beat Mikhail Youzhny in last years French Open and then took a set from Milos Raonic before bowing out in four sets. So, there are moments in which Silva has shown he’s capable of hanging around if given the chance. Silva hopes to make the second round of a grand slam for the third time since 2014. Silva has split his last eight matches on clay.
These two have played once in the past, which was in the 2012 US Open, a match Djokovic won in straight sets. The match took 23 games to be decided.
Djokovic is starting to show more consistency when it comes to returning to his normal self, and he hasn’t lost in the first round of a grand slam in over 12 years. Silva is one of the weaker players in the entire field and has done nothing to suggest he can beat one of the games top players.
This should be a three set victory for Djokovic.
